The Vault

The above photo is taken from one of the coldest reaches on Earth nearly 620 miles from the North Pole in the mountainous archipelago region of Svalbard, Norway. It is a seed/plant repository “safeguard” initiated and built by the Norwegians. The media is calling it “the doomsday vault”. Total cost to build this 425 foot deep concrete reinforced box buried deep in the mountainside was $9.1 million. Its purpose? “It is the Noah's Ark for securing biological diversity for future generations.” - Norway’s Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg. This vault has the capacity to store up to 4.5 million seed samples and will protect them from “climate change, flooding, earthquakes and a nuclear strike.” (It has already withstood a magnitude 6.1 quake.)

Does it strike anyone else as odd that a country (or any group) would go to such lengths for a bunch of seeds, but when it comes to the subject of the sanctity of human life, little thought is given except for the protection to end such life? What of the "seed" of the human race? Honestly…

If I remember right, Norway is really big on assisted suicide. Kinda makes you wonder about their priorities, heh?
